Y1 Learning Highlights

Week 5: Week Commencing Monday 25th Nov- 29th Nov  

In Y1 this week:  

  

In Maths this week we have learnt to become more systematic when looking at number bonds. In English we have completed a narrative in the style of Rapunzel. 

In our Discovery learning we have investigated the strength of materials.

Week 4: Week Commencing Monday 18th Nov- 22nd Nov 

In Y1 this week: 

 

In Maths this week we have moved onto writing addition number sentences and fact families. In English, we have focussed on time adverbials and using these in our writing. 

In our Discovery learning we have continued to look at the properties of materials, investigating changing states of solid and liquid.

On Tuesday, we had a fantastic time during our Art Day! All the children enjoyed learning about the artist Wassily Kandinsky, identifying the primary colours and mixing these to make secondary colours.

  • In PSHE we have focussed on tying shoelaces as part of our ‘staying safe’ learning – please practice this at home so your child can become even more independent. One way to do this is using ‘bunny ears’, link below:

Friday 29th November ‘wear trainers to school’ chocolate donation for Christmas fair.
 
Now the weather is colder, please can all children have jogging bottoms/warm leggings and socks for their P.E. bags.

 

If you have any moving picture books, pop up books, lift the flap, sliding pictures, moving wheels, and are happy to share these in class, please can you bring them in during the week. We will look at them during the following week as part of our DT discovery day.

Art Day

Week 3: Week Commencing Monday 11th Nov- 15th Nov

In Y1 this week:

 

In Maths this week we have moved onto addition and finding fact families using part whole models. In English, we have continued to explore the characters of Rapunzel and the witch, focussed on using ‘and’ in sentences.

In our Discovery learning we have looked at the properties of materials using vocabulary such as smooth, rough, bendy, transparent etc.


Home learning this week:

  • Read regularly with your child, including practising sight (RR) words.
  • Go on a material hunt around your home. E.g. plastic, metal, wood, etc. Write a list of all the different ones you find.
  • Continue to use Phonics Play https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources

  and Numbots https://play.numbots.com

Week 2: Week Commencing Monday 4th – Friday 8th November  

 

In Y1 this week:  

   

In English we have continued to explore our text ‘Rapunzel’ by Bethan Woolen. We have focussed on using new vocabulary and phrases in sentences. 

In Maths, we have identified missing numbers on the numberline and begun to use part whole models for addition. 

In Discovery, we began learning about materials. We have identified different types of materials both in and out of the classroom and grouped objects according to the materials they are made from.  

 

Home learning this week:  

  • Read regularly with your child, including practising sight (RR) words.  

  • Log into Phonics Play and play any of the Phase 3 games. 

  • Explore Numbots – Log in letters have been given to the children and should be in their book bags .  

 

 
Key Information:  

Starting on Monday both Year 1 classes will have a 3rd Year student teacher from Manchester Metropolitan University. Ellie Welsby will be in Packham class and Ella-Mae Machnik in Attenborough class. Their placement will run until February. We hope you will join us in welcoming them to our school.

Attenborough Class are Rockin!

Week 1: Week Commencing Monday 28th October - Friday 1st November 

 

In Y1 this week: 

  

Welcome back to a new half term. It has been lovely to hear about your holiday activities and to see the children at the Spooky Disco.

In English we have begun to explore our new text ‘Rapunzel’ by Bethan Woolen.

In Maths, we have used the symbols of more than, less than and equal to. We have also begun to order and sequence numbers.

In Discovery, we began learning about the seasons and identified a tree that we will observe across the school year, noting changes to its appearance.

Week 7: Week Commencing Monday 14th October - Friday 18th October  

In Y1 this week:  

   

What an amazing Harvest Assembly the children performed on Wednesday! Thank you to everyone who came; we hope you enjoyed it. We are very proud of how the children learnt their lines and songs.  

In Maths this week we have been developing our understanding of comparing numbers using the vocabulary greater than, less than and equal to. We have extended this to look at the associated symbols. In English, we completed our re-telling of Old Bear. 

In our Discovery learning, we continued our topic ‘Are new things always better? by looking at space travel and the impact of changes in transport over time.

  • Read regularly with your child, including practising sight (RR) words.  

  • Log into Phonics Play and play any of the Phase 3 games.  

 

  • Holiday Project: Learn and write about a famous person in transport. You could choose from people such as:

Week 6: Week Commencing Monday 7th October - Friday 11th October

 

Thank you to everyone who came to Parent meetings this week. It was lovely to meet you all and talk with you about your children.

 

In English this week we have continued our work on Old Bear by beginning to write a re-telling of the story. We are working hard to include full stops, capital letters and to extend our sentences using and.

 

In our Discovery learning, we continued our topic ‘Are new things always better? by looking at how aeroplanes have changed over time and learning about Bessie Coleman & Amelia Earhart.


Home learning this week:

  • Read regularly with your child, including practising sight (RR) words.
  • Log into Phonics Play and play any of the Phase 3 games. We are recapping the Phase 3 sounds from Reception. Reading Robot is one of our favourites in class. The password for this was shared via Tapestry last week.
  • Use the free learning game Bee More or Less on the website ICT Games to explore one more and one less within 20. Please follow this link: https://ictgames.com/mobilePage/beeMoreOrLess/index.html you can extend this to 20 by changing the slider at the top.

Week 5: Week Commencing Monday 30th September - Friday 4th October

 

We have really enjoyed our Art Day this week, looking at Giuseppe Arcimboldo. In English this week we continued our work on Old Bear by writing a character description for him. We were great at thinking of adjectives and then applying them

in our sentences. We worked hard to include full stops and capital letters.  

In Maths, we have focussed on counting forwards and finding one more of a given number. In our Discovery learning, we continued our topic ‘Are new things always better? by looking at how cars and buses have changed over time.



Home learning this week:

 

  • Please read with your child regularly throughout the week, including asking comprehension questions and practice sight words.
  • Write a description of your favourite toy. E.g I like my unicorn teddy the best. It has sparkly eyes and a big horn. It feels fluffy and soft. This can be brought in to share with your class.

  • Please remember to send you child’s reading books into school each day. Library books only need to be returned to school on Mondays.

 

  • This term our PE days are Tuesday and Thursdays.

Week 4 :  23rd  September - 27th September

A big thank you to all those who attended the Reading and Phonics meeting. We hope you found it useful, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher if you have further questions.  

In Y1 this week we have:

During Maths this week we have been recognising numbers as words. We used tens frames in the form of train carriages and had to match the numeral, word and then add the correct amount of passengers.  

 

In PSHE we talked about ways to keep ourselves and our friends safe online. Children shared the many different ICT devices that they are fortunate to have at home and we learnt about ways to keep safe and what to do if anything makes us feel uncomfortable. We shared who our trusted adults are and the importance of talking to adults if ever we are unsure. Great ideas Y1.

We have had another jam-packed week in Year 1! On Tuesday we had a visit from the Canals & Rivers Trust. Katie led a workshop that took the children through the development of the canals, explaining why and how they were made. In English, we have continued to explore the story of ‘Old Bear’ and in Maths we have focussed on representing numbers within 10 and extending this to 20 as a challenge.


 

Homework: 

 

  • Please read with your child on a regular basis, signing their Reading Record each time.
  • Please follow the link to a free Maths resource. Please choose games in the age range 5-7 years to practice counting with your child. This can be numbers to 10 then extend to 20 if your child is confident.

How we learnt about building a canal.

Week 2: 9th - 13th September

Dear Parents and Carers,

 

What a busy week it has been! Now that we have had a full week in school together, we can see that the children are showing a really good understanding of the expectations of Year 1. On Tuesday we had a visit from Christians in Schools Trust, as part of our RE curriculum. The children explored the meaning of ‘Belonging’ and began to recognise symbols of belonging in the Christian faith.

Welcome back to school! We have really enjoyed the last few days getting to know your children. They have shown great adaptability moving into Year 1 and have settled in well.

 

Homework: 

 

  • Children will be bringing a phonic reading book and library book home on Monday. Book change in Year 1 is each Monday. Library books can be kept at home throughout the week and retuned each Monday.

 

Important information:

 

  • Please could we politely request that you do not read the 2 books mentioned in the English section of the Year 1 Newsletter with your child. We read these books in sections over a period of weeks during our English lessons and it may reduce the learning impact if children have read the complete text at home in advance.
