Learning a foreign language is a necessary part of being a member of a multi-cultural society and provides an opening to other cultures. At Ludworth, it is our intent to provide a high-quality languages education, which fosters children’s curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world around them. Our curriculum celebrates differences and similarities between people and places, thus developing children’s empathy skills and supporting them to become their best selves, as well as global citizens. ​ 

 

Here at Ludworth, the core language taught (other than of course English) is Spanish. Our MFL curriculum is designed to progressively develop children's skills in languages, through regularly taught lessons across the entire academic year. Our teaching enables children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. Children progressively acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary organised around different topics. Our planning is based upon the Language Angels scheme of work that covers all the components of the Programme of Study. It is our intention that all children have the opportunity to learn Spanish through songs, speech, games and other activities. ​ 

 

It is our overarching aim to make learning a new language fun and useful in the children’s lives. In KS1, children are taught to read, write and correctly pronounce key vocabulary (eg. greetings, numbers, colours).  KS2 access quality first teaching of Spanish to adequately prepare and lay the foundations for secondary education; our ultimate aim being that our pupils will feel willing and able to continue studying languages beyond KS2.
